Asking the right questions about your neurological care

At Advocate Christ Medical Center we strive to provide the information you and your personal physician need to make informed decisions about your care.

Here are the questions you should ask any neurosciences program and the answers as they pertain to Christ Medical Center's exceptional neurological care program.

What sets your program apart from others in the area?

Who are the people who will be caring for me?

What technology do you use to detect neurological problems?

What type of facilities and treatments do you offer patients?

What type of rehabilitation and education services do you have?

What sets your program apart from others in the area?

Advocate Christ Medical Center treats the full spectrum of neurological conditions from stroke to treatment-resistant depression to epilepsy to the most serious spine and brain traumas. Our physicians and programs are nationally recognized:

  • Our stroke program is renowned and certified by the Joint Commission as a primary stroke center. We see six stroke patients per day, more than any center in the Chicagoland area.
  • Our expert neuro endovascular team performed the second CORDIS ENTERPRISETM Vascular Reconstruction Device and Delivery System procedure in Illinois.
  • Christ Medical Center has been designated by the U.S. Federal Drug Administration for the use of trans-magnetic nerve stimulation, a highly successful therapy for treatment-resistant depression.
  • Our multiple sclerosis program is one of eight in Illinois designated as a National Multiple Sclerosis Society treatment center.

The Neurosciences Institute at Christ Medical Center isn't just for adults. Our pediatric neurosurgeons and pediatric neurologists treat the full range of pediatric neurological conditions, including seizures, autism, brain tumors, neuromuscular problems and attention issues.

Who are the people who will be caring for me?

Our nationally renowned team of neurologists, neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons, neuropsychiatrists, neurointerventionalists, epileptologists, advanced practice nurses, dietitians, pharmacists, and physical and occupational therapists bring an interdisciplinary approach to treating all facets of neurological care. Learn more about our exceptional team.

What technology do you use to detect neurological problems?

With the help of highly trained staff and some of the latest and most advanced diagnostic technology available, Christ Medical Center offers patients and physicians a wide range of options to help diagnose a myriad of neurological conditions. Some of the most commonly used diagnostic technologies are:

  • Computed tomography (CT) - a non-invasive test that uses special X-ray equipment that captures many cross-sectional views ("slices") of an organ or area being examined.
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) - combines a powerful magnetic field, radio waves and a computer to create very detailed images of the brain and other organs or body structures.
  • Positron emission tomography (PET) - is a type of nuclear medicine imaging that uses a tiny amount of a radioactive material to help provide detailed images inside the body.
  • Electrocardiogram (EKG) - a test that records the electrical activity of the heart and detects irregularities in heart rhythm that can lead to blood clots.
  • Echocardiography - creates a two-dimensional picture of the cardiovascular system and can also produce accurate assessment of the velocity of blood and cardiac tissue at any arbitrary point using pulsed or continuous wave Doppler ultrasound.
  • Angiography - takes images of the blood vessels in the brain to detect abnormalities in the brain's blood vessels, such as narrowing or blockage.
  • Cerebrospinal fluid analysis - utilizes a spinal tap to check spinal fluid for elevated levels of inflammatory cells.
  • Evoked potential tests - Physicians record electrical activity in the brain and help determine how the brain reacts to stimuli.

What type of facilities and treatments do you offer patients?

Christ Medical Center is committed to ensuring that patients and their physicians have exceptional medical, surgical and emergency facilities as well as state-of-the-art equipment and technologies on hand.

  • Neuro endovascular treatments - Neurointerventionalists at Christ Medical Center offer breakthrough technologies and procedures to patients. The results are faster recovery times and considerably less rehabilitation.
  • CyberKnife® Radiosurgery System - We are one of the few centers in Illinois to offer this breakthrough technology. Using CyberKnife® neurosurgeons can treat tumors and lesions in the brain and spine, as well as other conditions, such as AVMs (arteriovenous malformations).
  • Spasticity Clinic - Our highly successful clinic offers the very latest treatments to address the painful spasms and stiffness associated with spasticity.
  • Pain Clinic - The clinic offers a full range of pain reduction treatments for patients suffering from chronic and acute pain.
  • Memory, Health and Fitness Clinic - One of only a few of its kind in the United States, the clinic provides brain fitness programs to help improve memory function in patients with cognitive issues, as well as preserve brain fitness in healthy individuals.
  • Geroneuropsychology Unit - This 19-bed inpatient unit treats patients with conditions that require consistent monitoring.
  • SINI Unit - Our dedicated surgical intensive care/neurologic intensive care (SINI) unit features the latest monitoring technologies and expert nursing care.
  • Emergency Department - Because minutes count when you're experiencing a stroke, the Christ Medical Center emergency department has instituted life-saving protocols for immediate care of stroke patients. In fact, our stroke protocols beat the Joint Commission standard by 22 minutes, that's 50% faster than the accepted standard of care.

What does this mean for you? You can be confident that in choosing Christ Medical Center, you are selecting a seasoned team of physicians, nurses and clinicians who have access to nearly every diagnostic and therapeutic tool available to treat the most serious and debilitating neurological conditions.

What type of rehabilitation and education services do you have?

Our physical therapy and rehabilitation program is designed to help patients regain strength and improve their health under the supervision of highly trained staff. This program is nationally accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).

One of the best ways to prevent stroke and other neurological conditions is to become educated about healthy lifestyles, as well as the signs of stroke. Christ Medical Center offers a series of classes to explain how your brain, spine and central nervous system works and to help you make necessary lifestyle changes like diet and exercise that could reduce your risk of certain neurological conditions. We also offer programs in the community and on site about the F.A.S.T. method of detecting stroke.

Armed with these questions, make a few phone calls. After you do your homework, we're confident you will find that the neurological program at Christ Medical Center is the right choice for you.
