Our pain management program

Chronic pain, described as ongoing pain lasting longer than three to six months and persisting beyond the usual course of illness or injury healing, affects more than 100 million adults nationwide. Continuous, uncontrolled pain can take a physical and emotional toll that can lead to a downward spiral of disability and worsening pain.

Timely referral to a qualified pain management program is essential to prevent and control the negative impact of pain and progression of acute pain into chronic pain syndrome.

Our program offers:

  • Interventional procedures to localize and treat pain sources
  • Customized patient treatment plans, counseling and education
  • Advanced neuromodulation techniques including neurostimulation and intrathecal drug delivery
  • Pain medication optimization to minimize risk and maximize efficacy
  • Close integration with other specialties including neurosurgery, neurology, rehabilitation addictionology, psychology/psychiatry and rheumatology along the continuum of care
  • Inpatient consultations and procedures
  • Outpatient clinic and procedures

Assessment & treatment

Pain can be difficult to assess because it's highly subjective. One patient may describe his or her pain as severe, while another experiencing the same degree of pain may describe it as mild. It's important that you report all aspects of your pain as honestly and fully as possible so that our doctors can determine the best treatment methods for your specific case.

For your treatment, we take into consideration:

  • The severity of your pain
  • Time factors such as how often, for how long and at what time of day your pain occurs
  • The location of your pain and whether it occurs in one place or several, in a large area or small
  • Whether you're experiencing a stabbing, burning or crushing sensation
  • Movement or activities that make your pain better or worse
