Expertise You Can Count On

Most parents say the #1 benefit of having a baby at Lutheran General Hospital is the confidence that comes from knowing you have advanced medical expertise available. Lutheran General Hospital provides Level III obstetric, perinatal and neonatal services, the highest level of care designated by the state of Illinois. This means we have the doctors, nurses and equipment to care for high-risk mothers and babies 24 hours a day. In fact, in many cases involving a mother or newborn with complications or an emergency situation at another area hospital, the mother or her newborn baby are transferred to Lutheran General Hospital. Mother and baby benefit from facilities designated for high-risk pregnancies, deliveries, and maternal care, as well as a skilled clinical staff of lactation educators, social workers, care coordinators and therapists.

A Healthy Start: Prenatal Care and Classes

Increasing your knowledge about pregnancy, childbirth and parenthood can ease anxiety and boost confidence. We offer many classes to do just that including breathing techniques for labor management, breastfeeding, infant care, bathing techniques for newborns, grandparenting, emergency first aid and childbirth education classes in English and Polish.

Delivery Pre-Admission

Once you've decided to deliver your baby at Lutheran General Hospital, please notify the hospital of your expected delivery date by completing pre-admission forms for yourself and your child. Pre-admission allows the hospital to prepare for your delivery and verify your insurance coverage.

Meeting Your Needs

Every baby's birth is unique-and so are the needs of the parents. That's why early and ongoing communication is essential for the best birthing experience possible. Our innovative, flexible care plan allows moms who are anticipating a normal delivery to determine the way they want to give birth by determining their labor and birth needs with their doctor, and defining their expectations, such as preferences for labor positions, pain control and more, prior to delivery.

Beautiful Surroundings for the Big Event

Our labor-delivery-recovery rooms offer the comfort of homelike decor, soft lighting and an easy chair for you and your guest. Each room also contains a bathroom, television, VCR, stereo and fully equipped medical station for routine deliveries. In short, it's a cozy setting designed to maximize your comfort. Register online for a tour of the OB unit, or call 1.800.3.ADVOCATE.

Family-Centered Care

Our family-centered philosophy is evident in every aspect of your care. You'll be pampered and supported by compassionate nurses and other health professionals. Dedicated registered nurses will remain with you throughout labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum, so as you and your baby get to know each other, we can focus on your family's specific needs. Our Level III status ensures on-site access to a team of skilled physicians and specialists, including:

  • Perinatologists-specialists in maternal and fetal health
  • Neonatologists-specialists in the care of high-risk newborns
  • OB anesthesiologists-specialists who provide anesthesia and pain management to women giving birth
  • Skilled obstetrical and neonatal intensive care nurses
  • A full spectrum of pediatric subspecialists is also available to provide the most advanced care in areas such as cardiology, gastroenterology and neurology.

Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
Just steps away from the birthing center, our NICU provides quick access to a sophisticated healing environment for premature, low-birth weight and other fragile newborns. Lutheran General's NICU is one of the largest in Illinois, with specialists caring for more than 800 infants annually. This advanced nursery has the specially trained staff and latest technology to provide the highest level of care to the most critically ill infants, 24 hours a day.

Parents of infants in the NICU are allowed broadened visiting privileges, and are encouraged to spend as much time with their newborn as they would like. Parents who wish to practice caregiving skills before bringing their baby home can do so in a special "homebound" setting.

After discharge, we offer parents continued support and guidance as they begin life with their little one. Parents can call the mother-baby unit 24 hours a day with questions or concerns at 847.723.6380.

Included in the discharge packet, is important baby immunization information for new parents including the baby shots needed at their two-month doctor visit and a baby shot vaccination schedule and record. Parents are encouraged to frequently visit our Baby Advocate on-line resource page to view age appropriate immunization information and newsletters on growth and development milestones.

Knowledgeable Genetic Specialists
There are many factors that can contribute to the development of a physical or mental deficiency in a child. Geneticists on staff at Lutheran General Children's Hospital work with parents to offer compassionate guidance and a better understanding of the disorders, their causes and the risks of occurrence.
