Joseph Marek, MD, named Senior Medical Director of Cardiopulmonary Services for Advocate Medical Group

Advocate Medical Group (AMG) is pleased to announce the appointment of Joseph Marek, MD, as senior medical director, cardiopulmonary services.

In this role, Dr. Marek will partner with AMG’s vice president of operations and leadership across the system to achieve exceptional clinical performance within AMG’s cardiopulmonary medicine services. He will report to Dr. Vince Bufalino, senior vice president of Advocate Health Care’s Cardiovascular Institute.

“Dr. Marek brings tremendous leadership experience to this role, having previously worked with Dr. Bufalino to develop cardiology services for AMG,” said Kevin McCune, MD, chief medical officer of AMG. “We are very fortunate to have him support AMG cardiopulmonary services.”

Dr. Marek earned his medical degree at Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine in Maywood, Ill. He went on to complete his residency in internal medicine at Cleveland Clinic Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio, and a fellowship in cardiovascular diseases at Loyola University Medical Center and Hines Veterans Administration Hospital in Hines, Ill.

Dr. Marek has practiced as a cardiologist since 1981, at which time he also began serving as a faculty member at Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine. Dr. Marek served as chief operating officer for Midwest Heart Specialists in Downers Grove, Ill. from 1999 to 2011. He has acted as president for the same group of practices, now referred to as Advocate Medical Group – Cardiology, since 2012.

Dr. Marek founded and serves as medical director of Young Hearts for Life (YH4L), a cardiac screening program for high school and college students. YH4L was recently recognized for providing a screening to its 100,000th student athlete.
