Physiatry

Physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) physicians, also known as rehabilitation physicians or physiatrists, are medical doctors with expertise in the diagnosis and management of functional loss associated with musculoskeletal and neurologic disorders. These include all conditions related to nerves, muscles, bones and brain, ranging from sore shoulders and lower back pain to spinal cord injury and stroke.

The physiatrist coordinates a team of other doctors and health professionals in developing and carrying out a comprehensive rehabilitation treatment plan, with the goal of returning the patient to full participation and enjoyment of life.

Physiatrists diagnose and treat a variety of conditions, including:

  • Arthritis
  • Back pain
  • Brain injury
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Chronic pain
  • Multiple sclerosis (MS)

  • Neck pain
  • Spasticity
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Sports injury
  • Stroke rehabilitation

Inpatient vs. outpatient programs

Some of our therapy services are offered as inpatient programs. In these programs, patients are admitted to the hospital for the duration of their treatment. Goals are set at the start of treatment, and patients are discharged home when those goals have been achieved. We establish goals based on input from the patient as well as the doctor's recommendations, with the aim of maximizing the patient's physical functioning before he or she returns home.

With outpatient treatment, patients are not admitted to the hospital. There is more flexibility for patients to continue the recovery process while getting back to their everyday lives. Our outpatient programs handle everything from sports injuries to cancer rehabilitation.
