Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center Earns Highest Stroke Center Designation

Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center has earned Comprehensive Stroke Center certification from DNV (Det Norske Veritas) Healthcare, a hospital accreditation organization that surveys and accredits hospitals against some of the most rigorous standards in health care.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, someone suffers a stroke every 40 seconds. Stroke is also the leading cause of long-term disability in the United States.

The Comprehensive Stroke Center survey is based on standards set forth by the Brain Attack Coalition and the American Stroke Association and affirms that Advocate Illinois Masonic addresses the full spectrum of stroke care – diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and education – and establishes clear metrics to evaluate outcomes.

"This certification is a testament to our stroke team’s expertise and dedication to providing the best stroke care to our community,” says Susan Nordstrom Lopez, president of Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center. “Every team member, nurse and provider who is part of our stroke team has made this prestigious certification possible, and I am so proud of their commitment to our patients.”

The hospital’s robust stroke program combines multidisciplinary expertise with advanced technological capabilities, medical treatments, and minimally invasive procedures, allowing teams of highly trained specialists to find and treat each stroke as quickly as possible.

"At Advocate Illinois Masonic, the success of our program stems from our multidisciplinary team’s commitment to excellence in patient care and outreach,” says Dr. Tim Mikesell, neurologist at Advocate Illinois Masonic and co-director of the stroke program at Advocate Health Care. “This certification shows that patients who come to our hospital will receive the safe, high quality care they deserve.”
