Chicago, Ill. – The new $100 million Center for Advanced Care at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center opened today in Chicago’s Lake View community. The 164,000-square-foot, three-story building designed by SmithGroupJJR and built by Turner Construction allows the medical center to expand and centralize three key specialties—cancer care, digestive health and outpatient surgery services—in a single, integrated platform.
The center improves access to care and continuity among disciplines, while creating enhanced operational efficiencies and a better overall experience for patients and their families. More than 20,000 patients are expected to be cared for in the building annually.
“Our neighbors worked with us so we could design the space to complement the community. Our physicians and patients in every discipline were involved every step of the way,” said Susan Nordstrom Lopez, medical center president. “We are committed to a new way of delivering health care and building relationships between patients and doctors to keep people well long before they need to be admitted to the hospital.”
The Angelo P. Creticos, MD, https://www.advocatehealth.com/cancer Center, formerly situated in a building on the southwest corner of Wellington and Mildred on the medical center’s campus, has been relocated to the north end of the Center for Advanced Care. The https://www.advocatehealth.com/cancer center now has two new linear accelerators for powerful, targeted https://www.advocatehealth.com/cancer treatment; 16 spacious infusion bays; and 50 percent more space for outpatient https://www.advocatehealth.com/cancer care.
The building also represents a seven-fold expansion of the medical center’s digestive health treatment area. Located on the south end, the digestive health space features five new procedure rooms and 15 private prep and recovery rooms.
The Center for Advanced Care’s expanded outpatient surgery area, housed on the third floor over 38,000 square feet, includes six state-of-the-art operating rooms and 18 prep and recovery rooms. The addition creates an integrated platform where patients and physicians can more easily access care resources, including an innovative multidisciplinary clinic with flexible, universal exam and consult spaces. Other amenities at the facility include a health resource center, conference spaces and a café.
“One of the goals of the project was to demystify the patient experience by creating a physical space that is warm, open and inviting,” said Tim Tracey, AIA, principal-in-charge, SmithGroupJJR, Chicago. “The design of the new Center represents the quality of care that patients receive at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center.”
Sustainable design features include a distinctive living wall that blooms year-round as part of a healing garden within in a 21,000-square-foot park that runs along the back of the building. The park provides pathways and outdoor benches for patients, visitors and community members. Also sustainably designed is the building’s roof, which is 50 percent green. The facility is targeting LEED-NC Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
Nestled in the heart of Chicago’s Lake View community, the Center for Advanced Care serves as a destination health resource to the community. Patients and visitors can conveniently access the medical center from CTA trains and buses or take advantage of on-site patient and visitor valet and standard parking. The Center for Advanced Care is located on the Advocate Illinois Masonic medical campus at 900 W. Nelson Street.
