Advocate South Suburban Hospital Certified Nursing Assistant earns Butterfly Award for exceptional service

Hazel Crest, Ill. – David Reese, a certified nursing assistant (CNA) at Advocate South Suburban Hospital in Hazel Crest, Ill. was recently honored with the Butterfly Award for exceptional CNA’s. The quarterly award is given to certified nursing assistants that go out of their way to provide compassionate care to patients.

Reese, from Chicago Heights, Ill., was nominated by a patient, who said, “Anytime I pushed my call light button, he came in with a smile. I asked him why he was always willing to help with a smile and he told me that it’s a pleasure to do the job.”

The awards ceremony was held during the hospital’s National Nurses Week celebration and was attended by nursing staff, family members, patients and hospital administrators. The patient Reese treated made a surprise appearance, addressing the crowd and describing how well he’d cared for her and how it had made a huge impact on her experience while hospitalized.

“Certified Nursing Assistants like David Reese are unsung heroes in the hospital,” said Sharon Otten, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, chief nursing executive and vice president of patient care services at Advocate South Suburban Hospital. “They may not always realize the impact of the work they do, but our patients certainly do. We are very fortunate to have CNA’s like David on our staff.”

The Butterfly Award was established by Advocate South Suburban Hospital in 2014 to honor the hard work and dedication of certified nursing assistants. Winners are nominated by patients, colleagues, or their managers and are honored at a public ceremony where they receive a commemorative certificate.
