March 19, 2015 - Laarni Dumlao, a nurse at Advocate South Suburban Hospital in Hazel Crest, Ill. was recently honored with the DAISY Award for exceptional nurses from across the country. The award is giving by the DAISY Foundation to honor the extraordinary compassion nurses such as Dumlao provide their patients and families every day.
Dumlao, from Park Forest, Ill., was nominated by a patient’s family, who said the post anesthesia care unit nurse provided exceptional care to their father as he recovered from a procedure.
According to the award nomination from the patient’s daughter, Dumlao showed great compassion to her father, even when he was uncomfortable and frustrated. She was attentive to his needs, never ignored him, and took the time to get to know them both. Dumlao recognized the subtle signs he gave to show when he was in pain and went out of her to make small gestures such as bringing a fresh, warm blanket without being asked to, offering a back rub, and, although he was restricted to clear liquids, allowing him to choose his favorites from among his limited options.
“Even though she was busy, Laarni really made my dad feel like he was important and well cared for,” said the daughter in the nomination.
Dumlao was recognized at a February ceremony at the hospital, where she was given a DAISY certificate and statue. Dumlao’s nursing colleagues, physicians, hospital administrators, patients and visitors were in attendance. Dumlao is also featured in a Spotlight on the DAISY Foundation website.
“We are very grateful to have Laarni as part of our nursing family,” said Sharon Otten, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, chief nursing executive and vice president of patient care services at Advocate South Suburban Hospital. “She personifies Advocate’s mission, values and philosophy in ways that make real impact on our patients.”
