May 13, 2015 – Cheryl Taylor, a nurse at Advocate South Suburban Hospital in Hazel Crest, Ill. was recently honored with the DAISY Award for exceptional nurses. The award is given by the DAISY Foundation to honor the extraordinary compassion nurses such as Taylor provide their patients and families every day.

Taylor, from Markham, Ill., was nominated by a patient she treated in the Intensive Care Unit. The patient’s story began when she woke up confused in the ICU with a breathing tube.

“When [Taylor] saw how much I was struggling trying to breathe with the tube and how it kept making me choke, she took extra time and attention to be sure that movements like lying flat, rolling and being bathed were as trauma-free as possible,” said the patient in the nomination. “[Taylor] kept soothing me and handled the situation with grace and kindness. She has a bubbly personality and made my days much brighter. She even took the time to wash my hair and made me feel human again.”

Taylor was recognized at a May ceremony at the hospital, held during National Nurses Week celebrations. Taylor’s nursing colleagues and hospital administrators were in attendance.

“Nurses like Cheryl Taylor exemplify the best of nursing,” said Sharon Otten, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, chief nursing executive and vice president of patient care services at Advocate South Suburban Hospital. “Keeping our patients safe is always our first priority, but it’s often the small gestures that make the biggest impact. Nurses are notoriously busy, but Cheryl goes above and beyond to provide compassionate care to everyone she comes in contact with. We are grateful to have her on staff.”

The DAISY Foundation was established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick died from complications of an auto-immune disease in 1999 and the care he and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired the creation of the nationally-recognized DAISY award. The award is designed to honor extraordinary nurses for the superhuman work they perform on the job every day.

Advocate South Suburban Hospital nursing staff and leadership select a DAISY winner each quarter. Winners are honored at a ceremony attended by colleagues, physicians, hospital administrators, patients and visitors, and receive a commemorative certificate and sculpture, called A Healer’s Touch.
