Available Clinical Pastoral Education program

Programs are based on a standard of 400 hours of supervised non-clinical and clinical experience. They follow two formats with variations of each. In each format, approximately one-half of the student's time will be spent in direct on-site clinical service. The other half is divided among supervision, didactic seminars and other educational experiences. Another program offered is our year-long residency program.

  • Intensive: Student hours are five days per week, eight hours per day, for 11-12 weeks, plus on-call experiences.
  • Extended: Programs utilize a variety of models. One model offers two days per week, eight hours per day, for approximately 25-30 weeks.
  • Residency: Year-long, three-unit program. An introductory or prior unit of CPE is required.

Types of programs offered

Chaplain Internship: An introduction to supervised clinical spiritual care practice with people in crisis. Chaplain interns function as integral members of treatment teams, assisting patients and family members to draw on the meaning and benefits of their faith and spiritual values in the midst of health crises. Skills in spiritual care are developed and approaches to understanding human relationships and spiritual needs are explored. At most sites, intensive 11-12 week programs are offered in the summer. 

Chaplain Residency: A year-long program. This training provides opportunity for a more in-depth and specialized spiritual care education experience. In addition to the basic format, this program includes:

  • Guided reading and instruction in the historic models of pastoral care
  • Theology in Spiritual Care
  • Studies in relationships among faith, religions and the behavioral sciences
  • Clinical/theological case conferences
  • Management and administration seminars examining principles and practices of Spiritual care administration
  • Specialized opportunities in areas such as obstetrics, oncology, physical rehabilitation, emergency medicine, pediatrics, gerontology, research methodology and design
  • Workshops and seminars in clinical ethical issues.

Certified Educator Candidate CPE: Designed for qualified persons with demonstrated pastoral, professional and clinical competence. Students learn the art of supervision through:

  • Education in supervisory theories by using conceptual models drawn from theology, behavioral science and education
  • Practicing supervision under an ACPE Certified Educator
  • Forming their identity as educators by a focus on integrating theory and practice with their distinct and personal attributes
  • Peer group seminars where the emerging Certified Educator Candidate's understanding and practice are tested.
