What is ankle replacement surgery?

Image shows a damaged ankle joint compared to an ankle that has undergone ankle replacement surgery with joint prosthetics.
During ankle replacement surgery, your damaged joint is replaced with plastic or metal prosthetics that move like a natural joint.

Ankle replacement surgery is a type of joint replacement procedure. It’s also called total ankle replacement surgery since your entire ankle joint (tibiotalar joint) is replaced with artificial parts. During the procedure, your ankle tendons may also be repaired to enhance your ability to walk more naturally, increase your speed and improve overall functionality.

Ankle replacement surgery is typically a minimally invasive procedure involving several small incisions performed in an inpatient setting. Your orthopedic surgeon will help you choose the best surgical approach for you.

After surgery, our orthopedic physical therapists will help you get back on your feet. Your rehabilitation program will focus on regaining your mobility and strength once you’re cleared for activity after surgery.

What conditions can ankle replacement surgery treat?

Ankle replacement surgery is a common procedure often used if you have advanced arthritis in your ankle. It also may be a solution if you have constant ankle pain that won’t go away with more conservative therapies such as physical therapy and medication. Over time, your cartilage (the cushiony substance that keeps your bones from rubbing against each other) in your ankle joint thins and wears away. This causes ankle weakness, joint stiffness and the loss of mobility.

If you feel you’re a candidate for ankle replacement surgery, talk with your doctor. There are other types of ankle replacement procedures that may be a better fit for you, including ankle arthroplasty.

How long does it take to recover from ankle replacement surgery?

It may take several months before you can put weight on your ankle following ankle replacement surgery. You can expect to stay in the hospital for one or more nights after surgery, and your ankle will be elevated for several days to reduce swelling as you heal.

A few weeks later at a follow-up appointment, your sutures or staples will be removed. We’ll also take imaging tests, such as an X-ray, to make sure your ankle is healing properly.

When do you start physical therapy after ankle replacement?

Following your doctor's guidance, you may start physical therapy once your incision heals. This typically takes 6-8 weeks after surgery.
