What are the visiting hours and guidelines?

Just as important as peaceful rest, is the uplifting feeling you get from family and friend visits. We encourage visitors for the patient’s recovery and overall health outlook and we have outlined some important information for visitors that will ensure enough rest for you and contribute to the experience here at Advocate South Suburban Hospital.

General Visiting Hours are 8 a.m.-8 p.m. daily.

Visitation outside of general visiting hours will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Nursing unit personnel will guide visitations outside of general visiting hours.

Intensive Care Unit

Visitors are limited to two at a time at the patient's bedside.

Family Birth Center

Fathers may visit 24 hours a day. Other visitors and siblings can visit from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Visitors are limited to four at any one time. All visitors must be free from illness to visit the new baby.

Quiet time – serenity, not stress

Evidence-based literature has demonstrated that having designated ‘quiet time’ for patients in a care setting has improved the patient’s ability to heal. Help us promote healing by allowing uninterrupted sleep and rest for our patients during the following hours: 8 p.m.-8 a.m.

Visitation rights

As stated in the patient rights and responsibilities, hospitalized patients have the right to have the support person (18 or older) of their choice to remain during their hospital stay. Advocate South Suburban Hospital will not deny visitation privileges based on race, religion, ethnicity, language, culture, size, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, socioeconomic status, physical or mental ability or disability.

For purposes of our visitation policy, “family” refers to any person who plays a significant role in an individual’s life. This may include a person not legally related to the individual. Patients may receive or deny visitors as designated by the patient or their representative including but not limited to a spouse/civil union partner, domestic partner, family member, friend or legal representative. The patient may also withdraw or deny consent to any visitors at any time.

Restrictions to visitation

Restrictions may be placed on visitation when the visitation interferes with the well-being, rights or safety of the patient or others, or is medically contraindicated in the care of the patient. Some of the reasons for limiting or restricting visitors may include: a patient’s need for privacy or rest; a change in the patient’s medical condition or a medical test being performed in the room; risk of transmission of infection; visitor behavior that is disruptive including having an unreasonable number of visitors in the room and for any of the previous reasons when the issues are related to the other patient in a shared room.

When the need to implement these restrictions arises, the patient and the visitor will receive an explanation of the restriction.

What are the amenities like cafeteria, gift shop and more?

Cafeteria service

Our cafeteria is located on the lower level of the hospital.

Hours of Operation

  • Continental Breakfast: 6:30 a.m.-7 a.m.
  • Hot Breakfast: 7 a.m.-10 a.m.
  • Lunch: 11 a.m.-2 p.m.
  • Break Time/Continental Meal Service Available: 3-5 p.m.
  • Dinner: 5-7 p.m.

The cafeteria is closed from 7 p.m.-6:30 a.m. There is a 24-hour vending area located on the lower level of the hospital.

Lori's Hospital Gift Shop

Our gift shop, located in the east lobby of the hospital, is operated as a convenience for patients and visitors. The gift shop is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-8:30 p.m. and from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Gifts, personal items, magazines, fresh flowers and candy are among the items available.

Online flower shop

Advocate Online Flower Shop can create and deliver unique, fresh or artificial, floral arrangements, as well as blooming and green plants to hospital patients and Advocate associates. Orders may be placed online 7 days a week, 24 hours a day but are reviewed and processed only during the retail shop's normal business hours. The retail shop, located at Lutheran General Hospital, is open from 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Friday and from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday. Our shop is closed on Sundays and major holidays. Clergy visitation

Patients often wish to have a visit from their pastor, priest, imam or rabbi. When a patient, upon admission, gives the name of his or her church, temple or synagogue, the hospital's office for mission and spiritual care will notify the designated church, if requested. Visits can also be arranged for patients who did not register the church or synagogue name. To contact the office for mission and spiritual care, dial ext. 463780.

Spiritual care

Chaplains are available to provide spiritual care for patients, families, hospital associates and visitors, especially during times of crisis, grief or loss. Services include visitation and prayer, ethical consultation, Advance Directives (Living Will, Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care and Mental Health Treatment Preference and Declaration), and spiritual and emotional support. Chaplains are in the hospital Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m.-10 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 3-11 p.m. For spiritual care, call ext. 463780. After these hours a chaplain may be reached via long-range pager by dialing "0" for the operator.

The Elizabeth Karnes Vaughan Chapel

The Elizabeth Karnes Vaughan Chapel is located on the main floor of the hospital. The chapel in the round design was specifically chosen to give all who enter a feeling of welcome and of being embraced. The lotus petals in the ceiling reflect this theme and focus attention on the circular altar. Four corner niches in the chapel provide space to showcase symbols representing four major religions. These symbols include the Christian tabernacle, the Jewish menorah, the Hindu Lord Shiva, and the Muslim Holy Qur'an. The three-panel, leaded stained glass Angel window reflects a message of hope and rejoicing, of glory and praise, and of compassion and protection. We invite you to use our interfaith chapel as a quiet place for prayer and reflection and to read from the Holy Bible on the altar or the Holy Qur'an, located in the northeast corner niche.

Spiritual care channel

The hospital TV Channel 28 allows patients and their families the ability to view live chapel services from the comfort of your hospital room. In addition, the channel broadcasts spiritual programs and music to enhance your comfort and provide spiritual support.

Meditation room

A non-denominational room for prayer and meditation is located off the hospital's main lobby, and is open to patients, visitors and hospital associates all hours of the day and evening.

Telephone services

All patient rooms, with the exception of the intensive care unit are equipped with telephones. To place local calls, dial "9" and the outside number.

To place long-distance and credit card calls, dial "9," listen for the tone, then dial "0" and the outside operator will assist you.

Patients may receive phone calls in their rooms between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. They may dial out at any time.

Patients' rooms can be dialed direct with a touch-tone phone by dialing the hospital at 708-799-8000 and the extension number that is shown on each patient's phone. For most patient rooms, the extension number represents the patient's bed number followed by the room number. For example, to reach a patient in Bed 2, Room 317, dial ext. 462317.

Phones and a TDD for patients who are hearing impaired are available upon request. Please contact your nurse if you are in need of either of these devices. To call the hospital, persons with hearing impairments may use the TDD number, 708-799-6190.

The telephones located at the nursing stations and in hospital offices are for hospital personnel only. Public telephones are available in the lobbies for use by visitors.

Use of cell phones within the hospital is prohibited as their signals may interfere with medical equipment functioning.

How do I find my way around the local area?

Area places of worship

There are a number of places of worship in the communities that surround Advocate South Suburban Hospital. Please contact the office of mission and spiritual care at ext. 463779 for assistance in locating a place of worship.

Local hotels

For those visitors who are staying overnight in the area, there are several hotels within 10 minutes of the hospital. Travel north on Kedzie Avenue to I-80 West. Once on I-80, look for the Harlem Avenue exit. There are several hotels at Harlem Avenue and I-80 in Tinley Park.

Currency exchange/post office

There is a currency exchange located at the corner of 175th Street and Kedzie Avenue, just north of the hospital. A United States Post Office also is located on the southeast corner of the same intersection.

Supermarkets

Two supermarkets are located just south of the hospital on the northwest corner and the southeast corner of 183rd Street and Kedzie Avenue.
