Lung cancer screening program
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S. Smoking is a leading cause of lung cancer. For smokers and those at risk of lung cancer, we offer a screening program to detect lung cancer early when treatment is most effective. The American Lung Association recommends lung cancer screening with low-dose CT scans for those at high risk. Medicare and most insurance plans cover the screening for those who're eligible.
Who is eligible for a lung screening?
- People age 50 - 77
- Current smoker with a smoking history of at least 20 pack-years (e.g., one pack per day for 20 years, two packs per day for 10 years, etc.)
- Former smoker with at least a 20 pack-year smoking history who has quit within the last 15 years
About the screening
Eligibility for the screening is determined by a few simple questions. A physician's order is required. Talk to your primary care doctor or call 1-847-990-LUNG if you have any questions or concerns. Our nurse navigator will discuss your risk factors and determine if you are a candidate for the screening. He or she can also help you schedule your screening.
The screening is done by a low-dose CT scan. It is painless and takes no longer than 30 minutes. The screening is read by board-certified radiologists. Results are available for your referring physician within two business days.
Your primary care doctor, along with a cardiothoracic surgeon and radiologist, will review your screening to determine if further diagnostic testing and treatment are needed. Our nurse navigator assists with scheduling recommended care and provides support and resources.
