Stipends & Allowances

  • Chief resident stipend: $4,000 per program.
  • Education stipend allowance: $1,000.00 (As of July 1st, 2023)
  • On-call meal allowance of $1,000 per academic year.

Paid Time Off (PTO)

  • Residents and fellows will have 28 days (224 hours) of PTO each academic year. Six (6) of these PTO days may be used for the national holidays that AAH recognizes (that is, New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day) or for alternative holidays requested by the resident. All PTO requests must be coordinated with and approved by the Program Director or designee in advance. PTO does not include program approved educational time to attend or present at conferences, jury duty, or bereavement time.

Educational Perks

  • The program pays for each resident a membership from the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA).
  • Residents has a covered subscription for Anesthesia TrueLearn
  • Residents has a covered subscription for Anesthesia Toolbox
  • Residents has a covered membership to Illinois State Medical Society (ISMS)
  • The program covers 100% of the cost of ITEs and AKTs.
  • Residents are provided ALS, BLS, and PALS training throughout their residency.
  • Up to 5 scheduled paid education days per year, at discretion of the Program Director.
    • Graduate Medical Education (GME) only offers educational leave for PGY 2-7, but the program offers this to PGY 1 – 4 residents so the PGY-1 can be included, at discretion of the Program Director.
    • Step 3 Examination – up to three days out of the 5 scheduled paid education days per year.
    • Fellowship/Post-Graduation Employment Interviews – up to three days (does not include travel time to/from out-of-two interviews).
  • Conference Attendance and Travel stipend
    • For MARC and ASA, when a resident presents at least two abstracts/presentations and the program pays for registration, transportation, lodging, and food.
  • Fatigued Trainee - Safe Ride Home Transportation Program. This is a GME program for residents to ensure safe transportation when too fatigued to drive home for post-call days.
  • Reimbursement of ABA Basic ($875.00) if the resident passes on their 1st attempt and registers early.
  • Provides transportation expenses for required off-site rotations – Rush, Lurie’s, and Christ.

Insurance

  • A resident or fellow may select any medical, dental and vision health care insurance plans offered by the Advocate Aurora Health Care System. Coverage becomes effective from the first day of training.
  • Disability and life insurance benefits.
  • Residents and fellows are covered by the system’s professional malpractice liability insurance for all required training related to hospital activities.

  • Access to confidential counseling and other support services available through the Employee Assistance Program.

  • The Graduate Medical Education (GME) Office has an exclusive space in support the lactation needs of residents and fellows.

    AAH Library: Residents have access to electronic versions of most anesthesia texts including Miller’s Basics of Anesthesia, Miller’s Anesthesia, Barash’s Clinical Anesthesia, and Stoelting’s Anesthesia and Co-Existing Diseases.

    TrueLearn: Prepare with anesthesia board questions specifically crafted by board-certified anesthesiologists to mirror those tested on ABA anesthesia exams.

    Anesthesia Toolbox: Residents have access to a collaborative project of over 100 academic programs to develop and share educational resources for anesthesia education. Multi-media peer-reviewed content, Wiki cases, and rotation curricula are just some examples Anesthesia Toolbox has to offer.

    AccessAnesthesia: The Advocate Health – Midwest Library is pleased to provide AccessAnesthesiology, an online resource that helps residents in strengthening their skills with instant access to procedural videos, self-assessment, and leading anesthesiology textbooks that will establish a solid base for learning and enables practicing anesthesiologists to reinforce their medical knowledge for recertification. Core resources found here include:

  • Top books including Morgan & Mikhail’s Clinical Anesthesiology, Longnecker's Anesthesiology, and The Anesthesia Guide
  • Case based learning tools - Many Board type review books, including Question and Answer review books.
