How do video visits work?
Learn how to start a Quick Care Video Visit or video visit with your provider.
If you’ve never had a virtual video visit before, you may have questions about how it works. Advocate Health Care offers three types of video visits – Quick Care Video Visits, virtual primary care video visits and a video doctor visit with your in-person provider. All are convenient telehealth appointment options that help you get the care you need, wherever you are.
Quick Care Video Visits are available 24/7, on demand. These visits are for common symptoms related to minor illnesses like a cold, flu or sinus infection. You'll get a diagnosis and care plan from the next available virtual care provider. It's very similar to an in-person urgent care visit, but more convenient for you.
With virtual primary care, you can establish consistent care with virtual family medicine provider you’ll always see through video visits. No matter how busy life is, you can find care with a familiar face when you’re sick, have common health concerns or need chronic care management. Appointments are required and you can schedule online easily with extended hours, including weekends. For added convenience, you can schedule same-day appointments – if your provider doesn’t have availability, you can see another virtual primary care provider.
You can also often schedule a video visit with your established, in-person primary care provider or other members of your care team. These video doctor visits with your provider need to be scheduled in advance during their office hours and are a time-saving alternative to visiting your doctor's office. Call your provider's office and ask if a virtual visit is appropriate for your situation.
All video visit types use a secure video conference platform that is integrated with LiveWell. Learn more about virtual visit privacy and security.
No matter the type of video visit, be prepared to answer a lot of questions since there is no hands-on physical examination. The virtual care provider will take the time to ask you detailed questions about your symptoms so they can address your health concerns.
Before your visit, you'll want to make sure you have a reliable internet or Wi-Fi connection. You’ll also need a LiveWell account. If you don’t have one, you can create an account.

With Quick Care Video Visits, it's important to note that the virtual health provider may advise you to seek in-person treatment during your video visit. You may also be asked to come in for lab tests, like a urine sample, after your visit as part of your diagnosis and care plan. They’ll also let you know if you should follow up with your own doctor.
Once you’ve established care with a virtual primary care provider, they’ll coordinate in-person care when needed at a location near you or connect you to a specialist. Most conditions can be managed over video, but some require in-person visits like annual physicals, lab work, diagnostic testing and screenings.
